the start.

A wise woman (or a will-o’-the wisp/a flibbertijibbet– depends whether you’re pro-free spirits or not) once sung, “let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.” For the blog world and me, that beginning is obviously, indisputably, and undeniably Kath. Kath began blogging in 2006, and since those early days with only a handful of followers, she has built herself an empire with her food blog, Kath Eats Real Food. She has swept in Foodbuzz awards, has been featured multiple times in Oprah’s O Magazine, and she still manages to post three times a day, just as she did in the beginning.

She and her husband Matt just opened a Great Harvest Bread Co. in Charlottesville, Virginia, and their niche in the blogosphere is quick and wholesome meals. Kath’s also an meticulous organizer, and she offers tutorials on how to get your floors to shine like the top of the Chrysler building (guess it’s a musical reference day around these parts). Matt likes to make beer. Kath’s the queen of oatmeal (really…her bowls rarely have fewer than 10 ingredients). She shows some seriously impressive self-discipline (the other day she ate a Cadbury egg she had been saving since Easter “for the perfect night.” It is September, mind you. Candy is lucky if it lasts more than 15 seconds around me). She can sip one glass of wine over the course of an entire evening, and the amount of coffee she can drink without getting a headache and without getting addicted is an ongoing scientific project akin to the Space Race.

She’s a blogger for you if you’re into healthy ingredients and hearty meals. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her in person (the day I was set to meet her I had more butterflies than I’ve ever had before any date with a boy), and she’s a ton of fun. Katheats marks the beginning of my blog exploration, and she therefore marks the beginning of this blog.
